Our locksmith Jamie was called out to an address in Milton Keynes recently to secure a side gate at a customer’s home. They had been some burglaries in the area and they were concerned that the gate was not secure and could be easily breached by an intruder. We supplied and fitted a rim deadbolt which is designed to be mounted on wooden garden gates.

The gate can now be locked and unlocked from both sides giving the customer piece of mind and an extra level of security.

Another excellent installation from our engineer Chevy for a customer in Hemel Hempstead!

We fitted a total of 4 security lights around the customer’s property. Three of them were upgrading existing light fittings, so thankfully, we already had cable and power run. The fourth fixture was installed below a bedroom window, so we installed a switch fused spur next to an existing power socket and ran a cable directly to the light fitting.

Today, more work was carried out for a regular client in Welwyn Garden City. This is a commercial building with visitors and staff. One of our client’s most essential requirements is having control of keys. Some spaces are rented to the general public for events, so the keys must be restricted to prevent unauthorised copies from being made.

Our locksmith Jamie was tasked with fitting an additional lock to a solid oak door; we decided on a euro deadlock with security escutcheons and a restricted key and turn euro cylinder.

We had an enquiry from a homeowner in Cambridge last week who wanted to monitor their back garden and be alerted of any intruders, they decided on our Ring Floodlight camera as they already had a Ring Doorbell.

Our engineer Gavin installed the lighting on the corner of the house and positioned the light so it would illuminate 2 sides of the house. The light was powered from inside the garage and we fitted a switch fuse spur so the light can be turned on and off and also isolated, plus the existing sockets remained free for our customers to use.

Our customer is now able to monitor any activity on their smart devices and any would-be intruders will be deterred as the lighting will be activated once they are detected.

We were recently contacted by a customer in Watford who had some existing RIng products including a Ring Doorbell and Ring Floodlight Camera and required an intruder alarm system. After some discussion, they decided on the Ring Alarm system as it integrated with the existing app on their phone and they were familiar with the brand.

We were able to attend quickly and our Alarm Engineer Chevy installed an external bell box, 2 internal PIR sensors and a keypad at the customer’s property.

Once installed it was all tested and the customer was given a brief tutorial and guided through the setup process.

A customer in Aylesbury reached out for some advice after having difficulty with their existing nightlatch. They explained that the lock was old and they were unsure if it could be repaired or if they should replace it entirely. Our locksmith Jamie arranged to visit the property to take a look.

After carrying out an assessment, Jamie advised the customer that, unfortunately, the lock was beyond repair so he recommended installing a replacement. He discussed the different options available and outlined the pros and cons of each whilst also giving the customer clear prices so they were able to make an informed decision.

If you are having difficulty with your UPVC or composite door locks, it’s easy to assume that the fault lies with the lock itself, however, this may not be the case. UPVC and composite doors are generally fitted with Multi-point locking systems which are fitted within the door surround. The locking system comprises a mechanism, cylinder lock (usually a euro cylinder) and handles.

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing issues with your UPVC or Composite door, for example, the door may be out of alignment, the mechanism may need lubrication, or perhaps the lock or handles have failed. Whatever the reason, it is always best to seek the advice of a locksmith as soon as the issue arises. It might seem overkill, but simple problems like these can result in much bigger (and more expensive) issues if left unresolved. We are often called to jobs that require full mechanism replacements, which could have been avoided, had we been called earlier. As the saying goes – prevention is better than cure!

Top Tips

• It is good practice to service your door’s locking mechanism, including lubrication regularly.
• Do not use WD40 as a lubricant. This can cause a build-up of dirt and clog the mechanism, we recommend silicon-based products.
• While it may be tempting to try and realign your door yourself, we recommend contacting a professional locksmith. If a door is not correctly aligned, it may strain the mechanism and cause it to fail.
• Check for draughts around door perimeter, this is an obvious sign that a door is misaligned.
• Do not force handle up to lock, this can cause unnecessary strain on the locking mechanism, causing failure.
• If the key is spinning round continuously or you’re having to wiggle the key to get it to turn, then it’s time to replace your cylinder.
• Call us for free advice, we only charge if we do any work, sometimes things can be resolved over the phone.

Something a little bit different this week!

A customer in Huntingdon had lost the keys to their garden gate and wanted a new lock installed. Locks fitted on metal gates can be a little trickier to replace as they are usually welded into place, meaning removing the old lock is a more complex process.

Our locksmith Gavin started by grinding the welds on the lock housing to remove the old lock. With a few modifications, he upgraded the existing lock to a union BS3621 5 lever deadlock. The new lock has been secured in place with machine screws which have been tapped into the gate stile, meaning it will be serviceable in future and easier to change if needed. The gate is now ready for our welder to visit and secure new plates on either side of the lock. Another great job by Gavin!

We often find that perimeter security is overlooked, but we always recommend installing gate locks wherever possible, as this will deter any unwanted intruders before they reach your property. Our customer in St Albans recently lost their keys; they were rightly concerned that someone might be able to access their property and wanted the locks changed as quickly as possible. After discussing the options, the customer decided to install a brand new British Standard Nightlatch; Nightlatches are easy to use, lock automatically once shut and, if BS 3621 approved, can be used as a stand-alone lock on the door.
